Crypto Futures Volume Rose While Open Interest Barely Moved: What It Means
A CoinDesk derivatives snapshot shows why liquidation totals, trading volume and open interest should be read together.
CoinDesk reported a rise in cryptocurrency futures turnover during October 7 market stress, while overall open interest changed much less. The report also described a notable increase in forced liquidations as traders repositioned.
Volume measures transactions over a period. Open interest measures contracts still outstanding. Liquidations are forced closures associated with margin requirements. A burst of volume with little net increase in open interest can indicate that existing exposures are changing hands rather than that entirely new leverage is building.
None of these numbers alone identifies a future price direction. Traders who look only at a large liquidation headline may miss whether positioning has actually reset. Measurements also vary across exchanges and data vendors, so comparisons should use consistent definitions and timestamps.
