Best AI Image Generators in 2026: 5 Tools Compared
Compare GPT Image 2.5, Midjourney V8.2, Google's Nano Banana 2 and FLUX.2 for photorealism, editing, design, API integration and local use.
The October 2026 shortlist
OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and Flare, Midjourney V8.2, Google's Nano Banana 2 and Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2 deserve consideration for different workflows. OpenAI describes Sunburst as its most capable current generation/editing option and Flare as its faster variant. Midjourney's own documentation lists V8.2 as the default with improved aesthetics, personalization and a new edit model. Google markets Nano Banana 2 for fast image creation and reference-aware editing through the Gemini ecosystem. FLUX.2 spans managed APIs and models developers can run locally. Availability, supported resolutions, controls and commercial rights must be checked against the specific plan before selecting a tool.
Best by use case, not a universal champion
For branded campaigns and iterative edits, test Sunburst and FLUX.2 on preservation of packaging, colors and layout. For creative art direction and expressive scenes, test Midjourney V8.2 while checking whether its workflow fits your team. Nano Banana 2 is a practical candidate for fast, integrated production in Google's tooling. FLUX.2 [klein] is compelling for teams that require deployable weights and local experimentation; the 4B variant has an Apache 2.0 license, whereas other variants can have noncommercial restrictions. Do not confuse GPT Image 1.5 with OpenAI's newer image models: official documentation now lists 1.5 as deprecated, with a scheduled shutdown in December 2026.
What RecoupRev actually compared
This guide compares current manufacturer documentation and evaluation design, not a head-to-head RecoupRev image-generation trial. To select a winner, create a blinded set of 30 prompts: product photography, typography, hands, multi-character scenes, reference-preserving edits and policy-sensitive requests. For every model, record usable outputs, retries, cost per accepted image and generation time under the same dimensions. Human preference is valuable, but factual fidelity and brand compliance need separate scoring. A model that makes a striking picture is not automatically best for a legally accurate product photograph or a truthful news illustration.
