Ether Traders Face Outsized Liquidations in a $1.19 Billion Crypto Flush

A sharp move across leveraged crypto markets wiped out bullish positions, with ether liquidations exceeding bitcoin’s despite its smaller market capitalization.

Leveraged cryptocurrency positions suffered a broad liquidation wave late on October 8 and into October 9. CoinDesk reported about $1.19 billion in positions closed over a 24-hour window, including more than $1 billion in bets that prices would rise.

The reported damage was particularly pronounced in ether. Liquidations linked to ETH were about $356 million, compared with approximately $298 million for bitcoin. Measured against each asset's market value, ether's liquidation intensity was substantially higher.

A liquidation is not necessarily the same thing as a long-term holder choosing to sell. It often occurs when an exchange automatically closes a leveraged trade after losses exhaust the trader's available collateral. Such forced transactions can magnify a relatively modest initial price move.

Oil prices, interest-rate expectations and geopolitical headlines were among the drivers weighing on risk appetite. Reported liquidation totals are retrospective estimates from market-data services, not a guarantee about the next move in bitcoin or ether. For readers, the bigger lesson is how quickly leverage can turn volatility into forced selling.
