Fake Clippy Memecoin Promoted After Microsoft Social Account Breach
A compromised Microsoft social-media presence was used to promote an unaffiliated meme token, according to reporting.
TechRadar reported this week that attackers temporarily compromised a Microsoft account on X and used the exposure to direct attention toward a CLIPPY-themed cryptocurrency. The posts and associated promotion were not an authorized Microsoft token offering. Microsoft reportedly removed the unauthorized content and investigated the incident.
The attackers exploited familiarity with a recognizable software character and the implied credibility of an official brand account. Meme-token traders can mistake a compromised channel for a legitimate endorsement, especially when screenshots spread after original posts are taken down.
The episode also highlights a second risk: links claiming to provide token utilities or creation software can be used to distribute malware or lure users into signing unsafe wallet permissions. A genuine product launch should be checked against multiple independent company channels.
Readers should treat any token claiming corporate sponsorship as unverified until the company confirms it through authenticated sources. Neither a recognizable mascot nor a high-profile social account is proof that a token has legitimate backing or intrinsic value.
