Indian Blue-Chip Earnings Expected to Accelerate Despite Oil Pressure
Brokerage forecasts point to stronger quarterly profits for large Indian companies, but higher energy costs remain a risk.
Reuters reported October 8 that several brokerages expected faster September-quarter earnings growth among India's large listed companies. Financial businesses, automakers and selected domestic-demand sectors were expected to contribute, although forecasts varied.
Estimates are not earnings results. Strong loan growth or vehicle sales can improve revenue while funding costs, credit losses and raw-material prices determine profit. Higher global crude prices especially complicate planning for an oil-importing economy.
For Nifty investors, sector composition makes a difference: banks, software exporters, consumer businesses and energy companies respond differently to interest rates and exchange rates. A positive aggregate forecast can conceal weak individual results.
The first company releases and management guidance will reveal which assumptions held. Compare actual results with estimates and avoid treating a brokerage's percentage forecast as a verified outcome.
