Indian Rupee Forward Premiums Rise After RBI Policy Decision
The rupee's derivatives market reacted to expectations for central-bank swaps following the RBI's October policy update.
Reuters reported on October 7 that Indian rupee forward premiums jumped after the Reserve Bank of India's policy decision. Currency traders assessed whether the RBI would use sell/buy foreign-exchange swaps to manage banking-system liquidity. A movement in forward premiums is not necessarily the same as an immediate change in the spot rupee exchange rate.
A forward contract locks a future exchange rate, which depends partly on the interest-rate differential and market liquidity. Central-bank intervention or expectations about future dollar funding can affect that pricing. Premium changes can therefore reflect funding conditions as well as a directional view of the rupee.
Compare the spot rate, forward tenor, domestic interest rates and official policy communication before concluding that the currency is strengthening or weakening. Importers and exporters may have different hedging needs. Readers should not interpret a one-session premium move as a direct trade recommendation.
