Reading a News Sitemap and Publication Date Correctly
News publishers need clear dates, accurate canonical URLs and responsible handling of updated stories.
A news sitemap helps eligible crawlers discover recently published reporting; it does not ensure that stories enter a particular search product. The date should refer to the actual publication event rather than being repeatedly reset to make an older explainer look new. Canonical URLs identify the preferred page where duplicate routes exist.
Editorial updates should explain material corrections and only change a modified date when the content was genuinely revised. A market report from last week remains a historical report even if a new summary is added. Source citations, distinct headlines and visible authorship help readers understand the context in which a claim was made.
For RecoupRev, the regular XML sitemap can contain persistent guides and reports, while the separate recent-news sitemap should focus on eligible news. Pages that merely paraphrase other publishers at scale may have little original value, so editorial verification and distinct analysis are more important than publishing volume.
