The 2027 VA disability rates increase is tied to a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) announced by the Social Security Administration on October 14, 2026. If you receive service-connected VA disability compensation, you can use this guide to estimate how your monthly payment may change, compare 2026 and projected 2027 amounts, understand extra compensation for dependents, and find answers about Special Monthly Compensation (SMC), payment dates, taxes and eligibility.
The essential distinction: the 3.6% COLA percentage is official, but the Department of Veterans Affairs’ public compensation page still lists its 2026 payment table as of this article’s October 15 research check. The 2027 dollar amounts on this page are calculated estimates: each published 2026 base amount multiplied by 1.036 and rounded to the nearest cent. Do not confuse an estimate with your final individualized award notice. For quick answers and a downloadable reference, use the interactive rating calculator, comparison chart and tables immediately below this introduction.
2027 VA disability rates increase: the quick answer
The Social Security Administration confirmed a 3.6% COLA for 2027, up from the 2.8% COLA applied for 2026. VA states it is required by law to match the Social Security cost-of-living percentage for disability compensation. As a result, veterans’ compensation is expected to increase by that same 3.6%, effective December 1, 2026. For many veterans, the first larger deposit would ordinarily arrive at the turn of the year, because VA disability benefits are generally paid in arrears.
Examples for veterans without dependents: a 10% rating would move from $180.42 to an estimated $186.92 per month; a 50% rating from $1,132.90 to approximately $1,173.68; and a 100% rating from $3,938.58 to approximately $4,080.37. The $141.79 increase at the 100% level corresponds to about $1,701.48 over 12 full months at the new rate. These are examples, not individual entitlement determinations.
Complete 2027 VA disability pay chart: 10% through 100%
Use the comparison chart and full table embedded above to see every rating at a glance. Our table uses the VA’s official 2026 veteran-alone rates, effective December 1, 2025, and applies the announced 3.6% COLA.
Here is what the numbers mean. The 2026 rate is the official published rate. The estimated 2027 rate is not yet a final VA-published table. The monthly increase is the difference between the two. The annual difference assumes 12 full monthly payments at the new rate and does not address retroactive changes, offsets or individual benefit adjustments.
Ratings shown are 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%. An individual rating of 0% generally has no basic monthly disability compensation, although some veterans may qualify for benefits such as certain SMC payments depending on their circumstances. The simple tables are for standard compensation; individual unemployability (TDIU), SMC and additional dependent benefits may make your actual amount different.
When does the 2027 VA disability COLA take effect, and when is the first payment?
The 2027 compensation adjustment is designed for rates effective December 1, 2026. VA compensation is commonly paid the following month for the month already completed. That means the December 2026 entitlement at the increased rate would typically be paid around the beginning of January 2027. Because January 1 is a federal holiday, a payment scheduled for that day may reach eligible recipients on December 31, 2026; exact bank posting times can vary.
Do not confuse this with Social Security’s own schedules. The SSA announcement says Social Security beneficiaries generally see the 2027 COLA in January 2027 and that increased SSI payments begin December 31, 2026. VA disability compensation and SSI are separate programs with different eligibility and payment rules.
If an expected payment is missing or different, check the VA payment history and award letter before assuming there has been a mistake. Bank settlement, withholding, benefit offsets, and recent dependency changes can affect the amount or visible posting time.
2027 VA disability rates with a spouse, children or parents
At ratings of 10% and 20%, VA does not pay an additional basic dependent allowance based solely on having a spouse, child or parent. At a combined rating of 30% or higher, eligible dependents can raise monthly compensation.
Our dependent comparison table includes three common situations: veteran alone, with one spouse but no children, and with one spouse plus one qualifying child. Additional circumstances are explained below, and VA’s full official 2026 chart remains the authoritative starting point until it replaces that table with 2027 amounts.
For example, at a 30% rating, the 2026 VA monthly amount for a veteran with a spouse and no children is $617.47; the estimated 2027 amount after a 3.6% adjustment is $639.70. At 100% with a spouse and no children, the published 2026 amount is $4,158.17, and the estimated 2027 amount is $4,307.86. A veteran with a spouse and one qualifying child has a different base amount. Dependent pay is not simply a fixed amount added equally to all ratings.
Generally qualifying children include minors under 18, certain full-time students ages 18 to 23, and children who became permanently disabled before age 18. Parent eligibility depends on dependency and financial-support criteria. Some added amounts apply for each additional child, while the tables already include the first child in their baseline. Do not double-count that first child.
If you add or remove a dependent, report the change to VA promptly. Eligibility and effective dates are not automatically determined by running a calculator. You can add or remove qualifying dependents through the official VA benefit process. A dependent adjustment is different from the annual COLA: the former reflects your family circumstances; the latter adjusts the compensation schedule.
How to use the 2027 VA disability calculator
The interactive estimator on this page starts with a rate from the VA’s published 2026 base tables and adds qualifying dependent amounts where the selected scenario allows it. It then multiplies by 1.036 for the projected 2027 payment. You can select a rating and family situation, compare the difference by month and year, and use the output for budgeting.
For more complex situations—multiple dependent parents, adult school-age children, spouse Aid and Attendance, SMC levels, pending awards, TDIU or offsets—your actual award may differ. A calculator cannot adjudicate who qualifies. VA’s published rate table and award letter are controlling.
The formula for a straightforward estimate is:
Estimated 2027 monthly compensation = published 2026 monthly compensation × 1.036.
A displayed result is rounded to the nearest cent. VA’s final published payments can differ by cents due to statutory rounding and rules for particular benefits. The calculator is a convenience, not an official VA system.
100% VA disability pay in 2027: the most-asked questions
For a veteran with a 100% VA disability rating and no dependents, the official 2026 monthly standard compensation is $3,938.58. Applying the confirmed 3.6% adjustment produces an estimated 2027 monthly amount of $4,080.37, an increase of $141.79 each month.
For a 100% rated veteran with a spouse but no children or parents, the official 2026 base is $4,158.17. The estimated 2027 amount is $4,307.86. For a veteran with a spouse and one qualifying child, the official 2026 amount is $4,318.99, resulting in an estimated $4,474.47 in 2027.
Different 100% categories should not be casually conflated. A schedular 100% rating, a permanent-and-total designation, and total disability based on individual unemployability (TDIU) describe different benefit concepts. A qualifying TDIU award generally pays at the 100% compensation rate even when the combined schedular rating is lower. Permanent-and-total status can affect eligibility for other programs. Neither status automatically changes the COLA percentage.
What about 70%, 80% and 90% VA disability ratings?
Veterans at 70%, 80% and 90% can see meaningful monthly increases too. For a veteran without dependents, the 2026 standard rates are $1,808.45, $2,102.15 and $2,362.30, respectively. A 3.6% adjustment yields estimated 2027 amounts of $1,873.55, $2,177.83 and $2,447.34.
Those are standard rates, not necessarily the actual deposit for a veteran who qualifies for SMC, has dependents, receives concurrent military retired pay or is subject to an offset. A higher disability rating is a determination based on evidence and service-connected impairment, not an automatic outcome of inflation.
If you believe a condition has worsened, that is a separate claims issue. You should review VA’s claim process and the evidence required for an increased disability rating. The COLA does not change your percentage rating; it changes payment amounts associated with qualifying compensation levels.
2027 VA Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) rates
Special Monthly Compensation is separate from the basic 10%-to-100% table. It can apply in circumstances including certain losses or loss of use of body parts, a need for regular aid and attendance, or qualifying housebound status. VA publishes many letter-designated levels with different calculations and dependency adjustments.
As a simple illustration, the 2026 SMC-K amount is $139.87. Applying a 3.6% adjustment yields an estimated $144.91 for 2027. That figure is not permission to add SMC-K to every veteran’s payment. VA sets rules about the eligible condition, number of awards and which SMC levels can be combined. Some SMC awards replace or enhance the basic compensation rate rather than stack on top of it.
Because individualized SMC calculations can be substantial and complex, consult the separate VA Special Monthly Compensation schedule rather than relying on a basic disability calculator. This guide does not purport to reproduce every SMC-L, SMC-M, SMC-N, SMC-O, SMC-R or SMC-S configuration before the VA publishes its final 2027 rates.
Does the 3.6% increase apply to VA survivors and DIC?
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a tax-free survivor benefit with separate eligibility and rates. It should not be described as the same thing as a veteran's standard disability award.
The official 2026 DIC basic monthly rate for a qualifying surviving spouse of a veteran who died on or after January 1, 1993 is $1,699.36, before any applicable additions. Multiplying this by 1.036 would produce an illustrative $1,760.54. However, special legislation or benefit-specific adjustments could affect the final payable amount, so that number should not be treated as a confirmed 2027 DIC rate.
Survivors should check VA’s latest DIC page for precise rates, dependent-child supplements, Aid and Attendance amounts and their own eligibility. Some legislative proposals could alter the DIC adjustment independently of the standard COLA; this article deliberately avoids assuming proposed changes have already taken effect.
How does the 2027 COLA compare with 2026 and earlier years?
The 2026 COLA was 2.8%, while the SSA officially announced 3.6% for 2027. That difference is 0.8 percentage points. A higher nominal COLA means a larger increase in dollar payments, but it is not necessarily an increase in a household’s inflation-adjusted purchasing power.
The calculation is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), comparing third-quarter averages from one year to the next. MOAA reports a 2026 third-quarter CPI-W average of 328.746 versus the prior baseline of 317.265, yielding approximately 3.62% before the official one-decimal-place rounding.
That is different from the headline September CPI-U inflation figure of 3.7%, which measures the change in consumer prices over a separate one-year window. The fact that both figures appeared in October 2026 news stories does not make them interchangeable.
Cost of living differs significantly by location and household circumstances. Gasoline, rent, groceries, insurance and medical needs may rise more or less than the national index for any given veteran. The COLA helps preserve purchasing power on average; it does not guarantee that every bill will become equally affordable.
Will disability compensation remain tax-free? What if you also receive SSDI?
VA disability compensation is generally a tax-free federal benefit. The 2027 COLA does not transform standard VA disability compensation into taxable income. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a different federal benefit with different qualification rules and potential federal income-tax considerations depending on total income.
Some veterans can receive both VA disability compensation and SSDI if they independently meet each agency's rules. The two programs use different definitions and processes: VA focuses on service-connected impairment and compensation ratings; Social Security evaluates disability under its statutory employment criteria.
Do not multiply your VA payment and then assume that result tells you what you will receive from Social Security, SSI, military retirement or other programs. SSA has its own official 2027 charts, notices and payment timelines. Whether a particular benefit can be combined with another may depend on offsets and eligibility restrictions.
Will the COLA raise my disability rating or change my claim?
No. A 3.6% COLA increases a scheduled payment amount, not your VA disability percentage. A veteran rated 50% does not become rated 53.6%, and a veteran rated 90% does not automatically become 100%.
If you have several conditions, VA uses its combined-ratings method rather than simply adding individual percentages. For instance, two 10% disability ratings combine to 19%, ordinarily rounded to 20%, rather than automatically creating two separate monthly checks. Certain bilateral conditions can add further complexity.
New claims, increased-rating claims, supplemental claims and appeals are distinct legal processes. They require evidence and may have effective-date rules and retroactive-payment implications unrelated to the October COLA announcement. Read the official VA combined-ratings explanation and eligibility guidance rather than treating an unofficial calculator as a claims decision.
Why is my actual payment different from a published chart?
Common explanations include an approved spouse, children or dependent parents; an award involving Special Monthly Compensation; individual unemployability; an overpayment recovery; changes to dependency status; a new disability decision; or an offset associated with other federal compensation.
Some veteran payments may be affected by military retirement pay, severance, separation incentives or other coordination requirements. Bank posting delays also explain why one veteran sees a payment before another.
Check your individual VA award letter, compensation payment history and dependent status. If a discrepancy remains, contact VA using the official account portal or benefits phone number. Avoid entering sensitive financial or identity information into unofficial "benefits calculator" sites.
Frequently asked questions: 2027 VA disability rates
Is the 2027 VA disability increase 3.6% official?
The 3.6% Social Security COLA is official, announced October 14, 2026. VA says by law its cost-of-living adjustments match the Social Security percentage. The 2027 dollar amounts in our comparison tables remain estimates pending VA’s published schedule.
How much will 100% VA disability pay in 2027?
Approximately $4,080.37 monthly for a veteran with no dependents, based on the official 2026 base of $3,938.58 multiplied by 1.036. With a spouse and no children, the estimate is approximately $4,307.86. Exact amounts depend on family status and other awards.
When will the 2027 VA disability increase appear in my bank account?
The higher rate is intended to be effective December 1, 2026 for December entitlement and ordinarily paid around the turn of the year. Because January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday, many veterans may see the relevant payment around December 31, 2026, depending on VA payment processing and banks. Check official notices rather than relying on a guaranteed date.
How much will a 90% veteran get in 2027?
For the basic veteran-alone category, approximately $2,447.34 per month. Dependents or other benefits can change the amount.
Will my spouse and children increase my 2027 payment?
At a combined rating of 30% or higher, eligible dependents may raise the monthly award. The supplement varies with rating and family situation. A 10% or 20% veteran does not receive an additional standard dependent rate.
Does a 100% permanent-and-total veteran receive a different COLA?
No. The standard COLA percentage does not change just because a 100% rating is permanent and total. Other benefits depend on the individual’s entitlements.
Does VA disability pay increase every year?
Not necessarily by the same amount, and not necessarily by a positive amount. The adjustment tracks the statutory COLA. An individual’s benefit can also change for reasons unrelated to COLA, such as approved dependents or new VA decisions.
What about veterans receiving SMC-K, SMC-S or Aid and Attendance?
Those categories may have separate rates, combinations and eligibility rules. The guide supplies an SMC-K illustration, but you should consult the VA’s official Special Monthly Compensation tables for your exact designation.
Is there a separate 2027 increase for VA DIC survivors?
DIC uses different charts and may be subject to benefit-specific legislative changes. Do not assume a veteran's standard 100% compensation amount applies to a surviving spouse. Use the VA DIC payment page for confirmed rates.
Is the VA disability pay increase taxable?
Standard VA service-connected disability compensation is generally tax-free. Tax treatment for Social Security, military retirement or other payments is a separate question.
Where can I confirm my personal 2027 payment?
Use the VA disability compensation rate tables and your VA benefits account or award letter. The official 2026 chart is the baseline for our 3.6% estimates; replace estimated amounts with final VA 2027 figures when they are published.
