Anthropic Says Claude Distillation Defenses Cut Extracted Reasoning by 90–99%

Anthropic reports a 90–99% reduction in reasoning tokens extracted by suspected distillation operators. Here's what its safeguards do, what remains unverified, and what Claude API developers should check.

What Anthropic announced

Anthropic says newly deployed safeguards have reduced the volume of Claude reasoning tokens extracted by suspected unauthorized model-distillation operators by roughly 90% to 99%. In a research post dated October 12, 2026, the company described a combination of restrictions on reasoning transcripts, classifiers that identify extraction attempts, and enforcement against coordinated abusive accounts. The reduction is Anthropic's measurement of activity on its own platform, not an independently audited industry-wide figure.

Reuters separately reported the announcement on October 12. The distinction matters: the company is reporting a large reduction in observable extraction, not proof that every attempted distillation attack has been eliminated.

What is a distillation attack?

Model distillation is a legitimate machine-learning technique in which a smaller model learns from a more capable model's outputs. Developers may use it with authorization to make systems faster or cheaper. Anthropic's concern is unauthorized, systematic collection of Claude responses or protected reasoning to reproduce capabilities in competing models. Its post describes networks of fraudulent accounts and attempts to obtain more informative reasoning traces rather than ordinary answers.

That distinction matters for developers: routine API use, evaluation, and authorized model training are not automatically illicit distillation. Contractual permissions, provenance of training data and how access is obtained are important.

Three layers of protection

First, Anthropic says it has restricted how reasoning content can be moved between conversations, accounts and model versions. Its preserved-thinking mechanism limits changes to prior context for certain newer accounts and models, reducing opportunities to replay or manipulate protected reasoning.

Second, the company describes a two-stage classifier that identifies attempts to elicit protected reasoning. Anthropic reports a false-positive rate below 0.1% in its testing, but that figure should not be treated as a guarantee for every workload or future model version.

Third, Anthropic says it applies stricter usage limits, bans accounts linked to repeated extraction attempts and, in specified circumstances, charges for requests blocked by safeguards. The company says tens of thousands of accounts associated with distillation have been banned.

What the 90–99% number actually means

Anthropic says the estimated number of reasoning tokens extracted by distillers on its platform fell by a factor of roughly 10 to 100 after its defenses were introduced. The estimate depends on Anthropic's own detection and measurement methods. It does not establish the number of attacks worldwide, quantify all possible undiscovered extraction, or show that an attacker cannot adapt.

Anthropic explicitly acknowledges uncertainty about how long the improvements will last and says it has not yet observed a highly sophisticated, persistent effort to circumvent the new measures. Those caveats are important when assessing the headline number.

Implications for API developers

Teams using Claude should review the official API documentation and test multi-turn workflows that rely on preserved thinking, context reuse or movement of messages between models. An integration that previously edited earlier context or replayed reasoning blocks may need changes. Test on a staging environment before altering production agents.

Developers should also distinguish between an API error caused by a security control and an application bug. Record response codes, request identifiers and reproducible test cases without logging secrets or private user data. Where a legitimate request is blocked, use the provider's support process rather than trying to circumvent the classifier.

Organizations operating AI gateways or model-routing services should review access controls, account integrity, credential management and the permissions attached to third-party model traffic. Avoid sending customer prompts through unauthorized resellers; privacy and contractual risks can arise even when the application appears to work.

Trade-offs and what remains unknown

Anthropic acknowledges that some legitimate developers have had to update integrations, that classifiers can incorrectly block benign requests, and that some blocked requests may still incur charges. It also says it has turned away paying traffic in pursuing these protections. Independent researchers have not verified the full effectiveness of the newly described system from the evidence made public.

The broader lesson is that model security involves more than filtering harmful prompts. Access patterns, provenance, reasoning exposure and platform abuse controls are becoming part of the infrastructure developers must evaluate. For now, the measured reduction should be read as an encouraging but provisional company-reported result, with continued monitoring needed as attackers change tactics.
