Upcoming: pre-order only

GTA VI's US pre-order may include an auto-renewing GTA+ promotion. Check the terms and cancel in time if you do not want recurring charges.

If you are looking for the best PS5 games to buy in 2026, there is no shortage of choices. New releases range from Supergiant's critically acclaimed Hades II and Capcom's horror hit Resident Evil Requiem to the blockbuster Marvel's Wolverine, the atmospheric SAROS, ambitious open-world adventures and creative indie games.

But which one deserves your money? RecoupRev compared verified 2026 PlayStation 5 releases, official PlayStation Store listings, gameplay features and the Metacritic PS5 rankings available during our October research. This is an editorial buying guide, not a paid product placement, and we do not claim to have personally completed every game.

The list deliberately separates games you can play now from upcoming 2026 releases. Grand Theft Auto VI and Phantom Blade Zero can be pre-ordered at the time of writing but must not be represented as fully released or independently reviewed. You will find direct official purchase and pre-order links in the shopping list on this page.

Best PS5 games of 2026 at a glance

SAROS — best science-fiction action; 87; April 30. 6. 007 First Light — best spy adventure; 87; May 27. 7. Nioh 3 — best punishing action RPG; 86; February 6. 8. PRAGMATA — best unusual science-fiction combat; 85; April 17. 9. Crimson Desert — best enormous fantasy sandbox; 77; March 19. 10. Metascores refer to the PS5 platform and the checked 2026 listings, not user ratings. The order reflects our editorial assessment of gameplay, variety, audience appeal and value—not simply descending review score. Scores, discounts and store availability can change.

1. Hades II — our best PS5 game overall

Hades II is an especially easy game to recommend to anyone who values responsive combat and replayability. Melinoë, the Princess of the Underworld, challenges the Titan of Time across routes that change from run to run. Different weapons, witchcraft, upgrade combinations and encounters make each attempt feel meaningfully different.

Supergiant's signature illustrated style and character writing distinguish the sequel from conventional action games. It is also more approachable than its difficulty might suggest: the returning God Mode allows players to adjust how they experience the challenge.

The PS5 release arrived April 14 and scored 94 on the Metacritic list we reviewed. It deserves first place for how much interesting play it creates out of relatively compact systems. One caveat: if you dislike repeating sections as you improve, a linear story game may be a better purchase. Best for repeat sessions, action enthusiasts and players who enjoy experimentation.

2. Resident Evil Requiem — the essential horror purchase

Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem mixes suspenseful survival horror with bursts of more aggressive action. It follows FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and series veteran Leon S. Kennedy, alternating between their complementary approaches to navigating danger. The result is more varied than a game centered around just one combat style.

Grace's vulnerable perspective intensifies exploration and tension, while Leon's sections provide a different rhythm. The game was released February 27 and carried an 89 PS5 Metascore in the checked rankings.

It is an excellent option for fans of modern Resident Evil, but disturbing imagery, violence and scares mean it is not a casual family choice. Look at the rating, the horror content and whether you enjoy a tense single-player experience before buying. It also has a free trial listing on the US store, subject to availability.

3. Marvel's Wolverine — best big-budget superhero adventure

Insomniac Games launched Marvel's Wolverine on September 15, 2026. It tells an original Logan story with fast, close-range claw combat, cinematic set pieces and mutant allies and enemies from the wider Marvel universe. Sony has confirmed extensive accessibility options, replay features and PS5 Pro enhancements.

The official store listing describes encounters involving Bolivar Trask's Reavers and other villains, plus locations stretching from Canada to Japan and Madripoor. It is a very different kind of superhero game from a lighthearted open-world adventure: the violence and language are intense, and the story is comparatively dark.

We do not invent an aggregate critic score for Wolverine. Sony's verified-owner store ratings are positive, but owner ratings and critic Metascores measure different populations and cannot be compared as if they were the same statistic. Choose Wolverine for stylish character-driven combat, Marvel lore and a polished single-player presentation.

4. Mina the Hollower — best independent adventure

Yacht Club Games' Mina the Hollower is a strong choice for players who grew up with classic handheld adventures. Detailed pixel-art environments, hidden secrets, whip-based combat and the ability to burrow through hazards turn each location into a mix of exploration and puzzle-solving.

Mina searches a cursed island where careful navigation and learning enemy behavior are often as important as quick reflexes. The May 29 PS5 release received a 91 Metascore in the checked ranking.

If you want an expansive but tightly designed adventure with personality and challenge, this is arguably a stronger use of your money than simply buying the biggest advertised blockbuster. The pixel-art aesthetic and occasional difficulty spikes are matters of taste, so check a gameplay demonstration before purchase.

5. SAROS — best intense science-fiction action

Housemarque's SAROS puts you on Carcosa, an alien world threatened by an eclipse. You play as Arjun Devraj, searching for answers on a lost colony. Permanent progression systems allow failed attempts to influence later ones, and combat demands close attention to projectiles, timing, positioning and survivability.

The title arrived April 30 and scored 87 on the PS5 Metacritic list. Its strongest selling points are tactile combat, unsettling atmosphere and an effective blend of action and mystery.

Players who loved Returnal will recognize Housemarque's emphasis on mastery, but SAROS is its own experience rather than a simple reskin. The repeated-attempt structure may frustrate anyone primarily interested in watching a story unfold without interruption.

6. 007 First Light — best espionage adventure

007 First Light is IO Interactive's original James Bond origin story. Released May 27, it explores a younger, resourceful recruit entering MI6's demanding world. The appeal is the mixture of covert action, mission-based decision-making and cinematic espionage.

If you like Bond's particular combination of gadgets, style, danger and improvisation, this is an obvious candidate. IO Interactive's background in stealth and mission design gives the project an identity beyond generic third-person shooting.

The checked PS5 Metacritic list showed 87. Consider whether you prefer an authored, cinematic adventure to a vast open world. Also check the available editions carefully: deluxe extras are not always necessary for the main campaign.

7. Nioh 3 — best challenging action RPG

Team Ninja's Nioh 3 released on February 6 and earned an 86 Metascore. Its combination of dangerous yokai, character builds, exploration and precise encounters makes it particularly attractive to players who enjoy learning demanding combat systems.

One of its headline changes is the ability to switch seamlessly between Samurai and Ninja fighting styles. That flexibility allows players to respond to different situations without committing to a single combat rhythm for an entire playthrough.

It is rewarding to master, but beginners who want a relaxing evening may struggle with the challenge and equipment systems. Check its difficulty reputation and progression mechanics before paying full price.

8. PRAGMATA — best unusual science-fiction gameplay

PRAGMATA follows Hugh and Diana, an android companion, through a lunar facility overwhelmed by rogue AI. Its action is unusual because movement and shooting are paired with simultaneous hacking, adding a tactical layer to fights that would otherwise be straightforward.

Capcom released the PS5 version April 17, with a checked Metascore of 85. Its science-fiction mystery and unusual partnership make it an appealing choice for people tired of familiar franchise formulas.

Buy it if you value fresh mechanics and compact, focused adventures. If you expect a sprawling open-world role-playing game, you should read the campaign scope and check the trial or demo availability first.

9. Crimson Desert — best for a huge open-world sandbox

Crimson Desert's central attraction is scale. Players explore Pywel as Kliff in a fantasy world with combat, travel, character encounters and an abundance of distractions. It is possible to enjoy the game's ambition while admitting that not every system is equally elegant.

The March 19 release had a 77 PS5 Metascore in our checked listing, considerably lower than many other games featured here. For that reason, this is not an automatic must-buy. It is a conditional recommendation for players who prize discovery and breadth more than narrative focus or a frictionless interface.

Watch extended gameplay before deciding. Sometimes a divisive game is the right purchase for a specific audience; a review score cannot fully predict your personal response to a large sandbox.

10. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls — best competitive fighter

Developed by Arc System Works with Marvel Games and PlayStation Studios, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a stylized 4v4 team fighting game. The anime-inspired presentation, dramatic combinations and character roster are designed to reward both experimentation and long-term practice.

It released August 6 and earned an 86 Metascore in the PS5 list. Whether you prefer to play locally with friends or practice online, the fighting engine is the main reason to buy.

The US PlayStation Store warns that online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. That recurring cost can matter if competitive play is your primary reason for purchasing. If you mostly enjoy lengthy single-player campaigns, consider one of the action adventures above instead.

11. Mixtape — best for story, atmosphere and music

Annapurna Interactive's Mixtape is centered on the memories of three friends facing the end of high school. Released May 7 and rated 86 on the checked PS5 Metacritic list, it offers a very different kind of experience from survival horror or a demanding action RPG.

Music, coming-of-age scenes and interactive vignettes are the heart of its appeal. Some sequences emphasize playful moments; others lean into nostalgia and the uncertainty of growing up.

It is a particularly good choice for people who value atmosphere and character relationships. Do not expect dozens of hours of high-stakes combat or progression systems. Its emotional tone is the feature, not a substitute for more traditional action-game mechanics.

12. Denshattack! — best creative budget pick

Denshattack! turns train travel into an energetic arcade sport. You chain tricks, grind rails and race through colorful versions of Japan while mastering a surprisingly playful movement system. It takes a concept that sounds absurd and treats it as a serious source of skill-based fun.

Released July 15, it received an 87 Metascore on the PS5 ranking. The official store has also listed a lower-priced standard edition compared with many blockbuster releases, though discounts and prices vary by date and region.

Buy it for creative gameplay, score-chasing and shorter sessions. If realistic train simulation is what you want, this deliberately exaggerated arcade experience is probably not the right match.

Upcoming PS5 games: do not confuse a pre-order with a released game

Grand Theft Auto VI: As of October 18, Rockstar's official PS5 listing schedules release for November 19, 2026. Jason and Lucia headline the Vice City and Leonida story. The US storefront lists paid pre-order editions and a promotional GTA+ month; importantly, that subscription may auto-renew unless canceled. A pre-order is not evidence of final review quality.

Phantom Blade Zero: Its official Indian PlayStation listing schedules release for October 29, 2026. The action game blends wuxia-inspired storytelling with stylized sword combat. Indian buyers can review rupee-denominated pre-order options directly on the official page. Independent post-release impressions should determine any eventual placement in a ranked released-games list.

Both titles are displayed separately from the 12 released games so readers are not misled.

Which PS5 game should you choose for your taste?

Choose Hades II for replayability; Resident Evil Requiem for horror; Marvel's Wolverine for cinematic action; Mina the Hollower for carefully crafted retro exploration; SAROS for intense sci-fi combat; 007 First Light for espionage; Nioh 3 for technical difficulty; PRAGMATA for unusual mechanics; Crimson Desert for sheer world size; MARVEL Tōkon for competition; Mixtape for narrative atmosphere; and Denshattack! for original, less expensive arcade action.

The most expensive game is not automatically the best game. Decide what kind of experience you want, then compare the standard edition and any discounted bundles. A focused indie title can be a better purchase than a giant game you will never finish.

Digital download or physical PS5 disc: what is better?

Digital games are convenient, but purchases are licenses governed by PlayStation's terms. A compatible PS5 with a disc drive can play eligible physical games and may give you the flexibility to resell or lend a copy, depending on local rules and edition restrictions.

Always check the region associated with your PlayStation account. The links in our main list mostly use the US store and may show US-dollar prices or availability different from your country. If you are shopping in India, Canada or Europe, open the corresponding regional PlayStation storefront and verify that the game and edition are sold to your account.

Do not assume that every title is a PS5 exclusive: this list covers games available on PS5, including multiplatform releases. Also check age ratings, controller requirements, required online subscriptions, storage size and accessibility options before purchasing.

FAQ: best PS5 games in 2026

What is the highest-rated PS5 game of 2026 so far?

In the checked Metacritic 2026 PS5 ranking, Hades II led with 94, followed by Mina the Hollower at 91. These are critic aggregate scores on that platform at the time of research, and they can change as more reviews are added.

Is Marvel's Wolverine already available to buy?

Yes. Sony confirmed the September 15, 2026 launch, and the US PlayStation Store lists the game for purchase. Check your region and whether you want the standard or Digital Deluxe edition.

Is GTA VI playable yet?

No, not as of October 18, 2026. The official PS5 store gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. You may be able to pre-order; review the refund and subscription terms first.

Are these games playable on PS5 Pro?

The PS5 Pro can play compatible PS5 titles, but the level of enhanced rendering, visual features and performance differs by game. Check the official store listing for any stated Pro enhancements.

Which game is best for beginners?

Mixtape may be suitable for a player seeking a story-first experience. Hades II includes helpful accessibility and progression options, though its repeated-run structure is not for everyone. Nioh 3 is deliberately demanding and may not be the gentlest introduction.

Do I need PlayStation Plus to play these games?

Not generally for offline single-player campaigns. Some online features or online multiplayer, such as those advertised for MARVEL Tōkon, require a paid PlayStation Plus subscription. Read the individual store listing before buying.

Final verdict: which PS5 games are worth buying in 2026?

Our overall pick is Hades II for its rare balance of polish, depth and replayability. Resident Evil Requiem is a strong big-budget horror choice, and Marvel's Wolverine offers an appealing story-led superhero experience. SAROS, Mina the Hollower and the year's more unusual indie games are excellent alternatives depending on your taste.

This guide is intentionally updated to reflect what was available by October 18, rather than pretending forthcoming games have already earned review scores. We will treat GTA VI and Phantom Blade Zero as upcoming until their actual releases.

Editorial methodology: We checked individual PS5 listings on Sony's PlayStation Store, Sony's dated release materials and the Metacritic 2026 PS5 ranking. Google Trends' public trending search page was consulted, but comparable live search-interest data for the titles was not available; our ranking therefore does not claim to represent search volume.
