Coinbase Calls for Bitcoin Quantum-Resistance Planning Before Computers Become a Threat
A proposal backed by one of the largest crypto custodians urges discussion of future-safe keys, transaction formats and lost bitcoin.

Verified development
Coinbase wants the Bitcoin community to begin planning for quantum-resistant security before powerful quantum computers become practical attackers. CoinDesk reported the initiative on October 14, 2026, describing proposals involving flexible addresses, backup post-quantum keys and a separate debate about the treatment of potentially vulnerable coins whose owners cannot upgrade.
What changes
The concern is specific. Bitcoin signatures rely on public-key cryptography whose security assumptions could eventually be weakened by sufficiently capable quantum computation. That does not establish that today's quantum machines can steal ordinary bitcoin at scale. Cryptographers disagree about timelines, and headline counts of experimental qubits cannot be converted directly into attack capability.
The wider context
Changing cryptography in a decentralized network is a governance and engineering challenge. Users, exchanges, hardware-wallet vendors, miners and node operators must coordinate around any protocol change. Wallet formats, address reuse, backups, long-term custody and transaction fees all complicate migration. A proposed approach is not a scheduled Bitcoin network upgrade.
Why comparisons matter
Owners of coins in old or publicly exposed key formats may have different migration options. That raises a controversial question: should inaccessible legacy holdings remain spendable indefinitely, or should a future protocol try to shield them from an attack? Such a change could create property-rights disputes and fundamental disagreements about Bitcoin's design.
Risks and limitations
For ordinary holders, practical actions today are narrower than sensational posts suggest. Use reputable wallets, back up recovery material offline, avoid publishing secret keys and understand whether address reuse exposes information. Do not send coins to a website claiming it can urgently 'quantum-proof' your wallet. Such appeals can be phishing attempts.
