Hurricane Isaias Cuts Gulf Natural Gas Output as Operators Evacuate
Gas supplies were curtailed alongside offshore crude production as the hurricane approached the US Gulf Coast.
Reuters reported October 9 that operators had shut in roughly 1.3 billion cubic feet a day of natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico, or about 59% of regional offshore output at the time. Workers were evacuated from affected platforms.
Precautionary shut-ins are designed to protect crews and equipment and do not always indicate permanent damage. Supply restoration depends on inspections and the status of pipelines, processors and coastal infrastructure.
Natural gas markets also respond to inland production, weather-driven consumption and storage inventories. The reported Gulf shutdown is a dated snapshot, not an assurance that US benchmark gas prices will rise.
