Why does the forex spread widen around economic news?

A currency pair can show a narrow spread in normal trading and suddenly become far more expensive around a Consumer Price Index report, employment release or central-bank decision. This happens because market makers face greater risk, available liquidity can shrink and information arrives too quickly for every quote to remain accurate.

CME Group's research on FX liquidity explains why volatility can cause wider quotes and thinner depth. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission also cautions that retail over-the-counter forex customers depend on the prices and execution arrangements of their dealers.

The lesson is not that every spread increase signals manipulation or that news trading is always unprofitable. It is that actual execution costs, not merely chart direction, determine the result of a trade.

How do bid and ask prices work?

Consider an illustrative EUR/USD quote with a bid of 1.10000 and an ask of 1.10010. The difference is one pip, where a pip is normally 0.0001 for EUR/USD. A market buy executes around the ask and a market sell around the bid, subject to the dealer's order rules.

A spread shown in a platform is not guaranteed to remain fixed while an order travels to the execution system. In a fast market the quotes may update several times. The price displayed when a button is pressed may differ from the fill reported later.

For an evaluation of trading costs, record the executed prices, bid-ask difference, commissions and any slippage. Comparing only the midpoint of two chart candles can give an unrealistically favorable impression.

Reason one: market makers increase protection against uncertainty

Market makers offer to buy or sell even when another participant urgently needs to transact. They may carry inventory until an offsetting trade can be completed. If prices are stable, providing this service can be relatively predictable. Around unexpected economic news, the risk changes dramatically.

One response is to widen the spread. Another is to reduce the available size at the best bid or ask. Providers may also update quotes more frequently or briefly step back from supplying them. Multiple providers making similar decisions can amplify the effect.

CME Group's educational material on liquidity and immediacy identifies inventory risk and the cost of supplying immediacy as important components of quoted prices. A spread compensates providers for risk; it is not simply a fixed transaction fee.

That does not mean wider spreads always predict a large market move. It means the cost and uncertainty associated with supplying a firm quote have increased.

Reason two: the available order-book depth becomes thinner

Before a scheduled release, some participants cancel resting orders or reduce order sizes. When many traders act at once, market orders can consume nearby liquidity and force execution at progressively worse prices.

Spot forex is largely an over-the-counter market, not one global exchange with a universal order book. Prices are distributed through dealer relationships, trading platforms and liquidity providers. Different venues can therefore show different spreads at the same moment.

CME Group's analysis of currency trading in turbulent markets argues that liquidity assessment should consider more than top-of-book spreads. Price continuity, replenishment and available volume are relevant. A busy market with many trades is not automatically one where large orders can execute cheaply.

Broker quotations should be compared with care: accounts may have different liquidity arrangements, product structures and execution policies. A screenshot taken from one broker does not show the full foreign-exchange market.

Reason three: information makes older quotes risky

When an announcement surprises investors, fast systems and human traders both attempt to trade on the new information. A provider continuing to offer an outdated price risks dealing repeatedly with participants who have already processed the data.

This is a form of adverse-selection risk. For example, stronger-than-expected US jobs data could immediately alter expectations for interest rates. A market maker might have to withdraw or widen quotes until it can estimate a new price and hedge its exposure.

Headline figures are not the entire story. Traders may interpret revisions, wage data or conflicting components differently. The initial price can change again as more information is absorbed.

Temporary spread widening is therefore part of price discovery in an uncertain environment. It can occur even when the total number of orders is increasing, because much of that activity is concentrated on one side of the market.

What happens during US CPI or NFP?

Ahead of a widely anticipated release, providers may quote smaller sizes or wider spreads. At the announcement, prices can move rapidly as traders and algorithms reassess the likely path of rates and currencies. Some stops and market orders arrive as liquidity becomes less reliable.

Conditions often normalize after the first reaction, but the timing varies. A straightforward result may be absorbed quickly, while mixed inflation components or a second unexpected headline can prolong the volatility.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics schedules the September 2026 US CPI release for October 14 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Traders should check the agency's official calendar because a broker's economic calendar can have incorrect time-zone conversions or outdated details.

There is no guaranteed number of minutes after which trading becomes safe. Watch the actual bid and ask, available liquidity and recent execution quality instead of relying on a universal countdown.

Worked example: spread widening from one pip to five

Assume a standard EUR/USD lot represents 100,000 euros and the account is denominated in US dollars. Under those conditions one pip is normally worth about $10 per standard lot.

At a one-pip spread, the approximate spread component of an immediate round trip is $10 for one standard lot. At a five-pip spread it is about $50. That is an extra $40 of cost without changing the directional market view. The values are illustrative, not claims about any broker's actual CPI-day quotes.

A variable-spread backtest should incorporate commissions and realistic execution, rather than multiplying winning candles by lot size and ignoring the price difference between bid and ask.

Do not tighten the stop automatically to compensate for higher costs. A closer stop may simply be triggered by normal market movement or spread changes.

Can a spread hit a stop when the chart does not?

Yes, depending on the platform's chart and execution conventions. Many retail terminals draw the visible price series using bid quotes while buy and sell orders are executed using different sides of the market.

The exact rules differ between forex dealers, CFDs and exchange-traded products. A correct explanation requires knowing the instrument, which quote triggers the order and the broker's order-processing terms.

Where supported, enable the ask line and preserve bid-ask history around disputed executions. Keep order identifiers and timestamps. A chart screenshot showing only one price series is not sufficient to prove why a stop was triggered.

An apparently unusual fill is worth examining, but spread expansion itself is not evidence that a particular broker acted improperly.

Spread widening and slippage are different risks

A market order can suffer slippage as prices update before execution. A stop order may fill beyond its trigger when the market gaps through the level. That risk can remain even if the spread narrows quickly after the first movement.

Conversely, a trader may receive an execution precisely at the currently advertised ask while paying a much wider spread than during an ordinary session. In that case, the main additional expense is spread rather than slippage.

Some orders can receive favorable price improvement and others negative slippage. Outcomes depend on venue rules, available depth, order types and dealer policies.

A proper trading journal records spread cost and execution slippage separately. Combining them into a vague complaint that the “broker took extra pips” makes it harder to identify what actually happened.

Why do gold, GBP/JPY and exotic pairs differ?

Market liquidity and volatility vary across instruments. EUR/USD is among the most actively traded major currency pairs and often has tighter normal-session spreads than less liquid pairs. GBP/JPY can experience sharp changes when sterling and yen expectations move together or oppose one another.

Gold quoted as XAU/USD is not identical to a conventional currency pair, despite appearing in the same trading terminal. Contract size, trading hours, price increments and broker liquidity arrangements can differ.

Exotic currencies may have lower turnover, fewer active providers or local trading restrictions. Holidays or central-bank intervention can create gaps and make hedging difficult. Wide spreads may persist even without a global headline.

Comparing two instruments requires examining the spread relative to their typical movement and contract value. A numerically large spread in one market does not necessarily imply a higher percentage cost than a small spread in another.

Why can spreads rise at rollover and on weekends?

Economic releases are not the only periods of thin liquidity. Daily trading transitions can occur when major participants are less active and some dealers adjust financing arrangements. Spreads may expand even though the chart shows little movement.

Near a weekend close, market makers may manage exposure to events that could happen before trading resumes. Holidays can remove banks or major dealing centers from the market. Fewer providers or smaller available sizes can make prices more sensitive to incoming orders.

The exact rollover time and swap or financing schedule depend on the broker and product. There is no universally valid spread schedule for every trading account.

Holding positions across a closure also creates gap risk, which should be assessed separately from the usual spread.

Is spread widening evidence of broker manipulation?

Not by itself. A sudden increase can reflect genuine changes in the underlying liquidity available to the dealer. To investigate a suspicious quote, compare equivalent instruments, timestamps, dealer policies and independent market references.

There are also legitimate concerns about dealer behavior. The CFTC advises retail OTC forex customers that the dealer generally acts as their counterparty and controls the prices displayed on its platform. Customers should verify registration and review execution terms before depositing money.

Social-media accusations alone are unreliable evidence, but neither should an investor accept unexplainable price differences without examining the facts.

How to reduce the risk of expensive news fills

One practical option is to avoid opening new leveraged positions immediately around high-impact announcements. This can mean missing some moves, but it avoids intentionally entering during a period of potentially unstable quotes.

If trading near news, calculate the permitted risk using the instrument's verified contract value and a realistic allowance for costs. A large position paired with an extremely tight stop is not automatically safer than a smaller position.

Review past executions at the relevant time of day. A strategy based on average spreads in the London-New York overlap may not remain viable during a central-bank surprise.

Finally, inspect all open positions together. Several trades involving the dollar may react to the same report and cause aggregate losses larger than any one position's planned amount.

What should be tracked after every trade?

Record the quoted bid and ask at entry and exit, the order's expected price, executed price, commission and timing. Compare the price movement shown on a chart with the amount actually gained or lost after dealing costs.

Review whether losses are caused by incorrect market direction, excessive position size, spread expansion, slippage or operational mistakes. Each cause requires a different response.

A consistent journal does not guarantee a profitable system. It does, however, stop a trader from mistaking a correct prediction for a good trade when execution expenses consistently remove the expected advantage.

Frequently asked questions

Why does EUR/USD spread widen before CPI?

Can spread widening close my stop-loss?

Yes, where the stop is triggered by the bid or ask that moves through the relevant level. Check the broker's rules and bid-ask record rather than relying solely on the visible candle.

Is slippage the same as spread?

No. Spread is the gap between bid and ask. Slippage is the difference between expected and executed order prices. Either can increase total cost.

Does a fixed spread protect against news volatility?

Not necessarily. Fixed-spread products can have restrictions, alternative charges or execution risks. Read the applicable terms rather than assuming normal-session conditions apply.

How long should I wait after NFP?

There is no universally safe waiting period. Look for stable executable quotes and more consistent market depth; some announcements take longer to absorb than others.

Are wider spreads always caused by unregulated brokers?

What source should I trust for CPI time?

Use the Bureau of Labor Statistics release calendar, with the time converted correctly for your location and the date's daylight-saving rules.

Conclusion: a correct forecast still needs an executable trade

Forex spreads widen around news because the providers of immediate prices face greater risk, available liquidity can thin and market participants race to incorporate new information. A wider quote can be entirely consistent with changing market conditions even when a currency pair is actively traded.

The practical response is to understand bid-ask pricing, know which quote triggers an order, allow for realistic transaction costs and avoid assuming that an ordinary stop guarantees an exact exit. CME Group's liquidity explanations and the CFTC's retail forex advisory are useful sources for evaluating these mechanisms.
