Rug-Pull Risk: Liquidity Removal Is a Different Threat From Price Loss
An abrupt withdrawal of pool assets can leave traders unable to exit even before ordinary volatility is considered.
A rug pull can involve insiders removing liquidity or abandoning a token after attracting outside funds. Chainalysis identifies research patterns involving liquidity withdrawal and trading behavior, while warning that flagged patterns are not definitive findings of illegal intent. Market price losses alone do not prove that a developer has taken funds.
In a decentralized exchange pool, the assets available to swap against determine how much a buyer or seller can transact without moving the price. If much of that liquidity disappears, the effective exit cost can become extreme. Contract privileges may also create hazards if token transfers can be paused or charges changed.
Before interacting with a small new token, verify contract permissions, who controls liquidity and whether independent audits or documentation exist. Contract audits can lower certain technical risks but cannot ensure a price floor. Be especially cautious when promoters promise a fixed return.
