European stock markets ended Thursday, October 22, 2026 on the defensive. Reuters reported the pan-European STOXX 600 closed above 1% lower at 637.74, its largest decline in approximately three weeks. Unlike the still-active US trading-day figures elsewhere in this edition, this is a reported completed European session close.

What drove the decline?

The euro-area banking index fell 4.2%, with earnings-related setbacks at Bankinter and Barclays prominent in the sector. Bankinter declined 7.6% after reporting pressure from higher deposit costs; Barclays lost 2.3% after a smaller-than-expected quarterly profit. Investors had to weigh bank-specific cost pressures against the wider effects of expensive energy and fiscal uncertainty.

French government debt was another concern. The yield difference between French and German 10-year bonds reached a 15-year high, Reuters reported, amid political unease. Rising sovereign risk premiums can feed into bank valuations, financing costs and currency expectations because banks hold government assets and operate in interest-rate-sensitive markets.

Not every sector moved in the same direction

Technology stocks followed the global AI-linked selloff, with the European technology index down around 2%. Shares of several chipmakers also weakened. But healthcare led gains and individual companies with upbeat earnings showed resilience, reminding investors that an index-level fall can conceal large differences between sectors.

How to read the STOXX 600 alongside the DAX and FTSE

The STOXX 600 spans a broader set of European issuers than any individual national benchmark. Germany's DAX, Britain's FTSE 100 and France's CAC 40 have different sector weights and currency exposures. Comparing those indices is most useful when their market hours, currency basis and closing dates match. A percentage drop in a bank-heavy subindex does not mean every listed bank fell the same amount.

For the next session, consider whether banking earnings downgrades spread, whether France's bond spread narrows, and how Brent crude evolves. This is educational reporting on a completed index session rather than a prediction or a live-price service.
