USD/JPY and EUR/USD on October 22: Yen Gains as France Bond Fears Hit Euro
The yen strengthened and the euro weakened against the dollar as elevated oil prices, AI-stock losses and French fiscal risk changed currency positioning.
Currency markets reflected a complicated global risk-off mood on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Reuters reported that the Japanese yen strengthened approximately 0.51% to 157.33 per US dollar during its observation window. At the same time the euro was about 0.3% lower at $1.1198, while the dollar index was approximately 101.82. These quotes were reported at different market moments and are historical, not an executable trading feed.
Why the yen found support
Investors often revisit the yen when equity volatility increases, especially if market yields and leveraged positions are moving quickly. In this session, global AI-investment concerns and the energy shock were relevant factors. Yen strength is not automatic during every risk-off event, however: US-Japan interest-rate differentials and monetary-policy expectations can outweigh safe-haven flows.
Why the euro underperformed
French fiscal and political risk weighed on European debt markets. Reuters reported France's 10-year government borrowing yield spread over Germany reaching 177.7 basis points, its widest since 2011. A widening spread suggests investors demand extra compensation to hold French rather than German debt. That may harm euro sentiment even when American technology shares are under pressure.
What a currency quote actually means
A decline in USD/JPY means fewer yen are required to buy a dollar, consistent with a stronger yen. A decline in EUR/USD means one euro buys fewer dollars, consistent with a weaker euro. Do not treat these currency-pair moves as the same signal, and distinguish spot FX observations from leveraged retail broker quotes with different spreads.
Watchlist for October 23
Track the France-Germany sovereign spread, the US dollar index, oil futures, Treasury yields and Friday's US consumer-sentiment publication. Rather than inventing precise trade levels from nonsynchronous news reports, verify the most recent session high and low on your broker's own chart. The timing of events and contract rollover can matter around volatility spikes.
