Bitcoin Rebounds Above $82,000 After $950 Million Crypto Liquidation Wave

Bitcoin recovered after a brief slide below $80,000, but hotter US inflation data and ETF withdrawals kept risk appetite fragile in October 16 trading.

Bitcoin staged a rebound in Friday's October 16, 2026 trading after briefly dropping below $80,000. The Economic Times reported a Bitcoin price of approximately $82,045 in its 4:02 p.m. India-time update, alongside an estimated $950 million in liquidated leveraged cryptocurrency positions. That quote is a dated market snapshot, not the current BTC/USD price.

Why did Bitcoin fall below $80,000?

The renewed weakness followed stronger-than-expected US producer inflation numbers, which intensified concern that the Federal Reserve might keep monetary policy restrictive. Higher expected rates can weigh on assets prized mainly for long-term growth or liquidity-sensitive speculation.

The report cited producer prices increasing 6.3% from a year earlier, versus a lower forecast. Revisions to expected interest rates can affect bond yields, the dollar and crypto in different ways. Bitcoin's recovery later in the session did not remove the uncertainty around inflation or future policy.

What does $950 million in liquidations mean?

Liquidations are positions that an exchange closes when leveraged traders can no longer maintain the required margin. This is different from saying investors voluntarily sold $950 million of Bitcoin on the spot market. The figure cited in the market report covers broader leveraged crypto activity, not Bitcoin alone.

Forced closures can accelerate declines and produce violent rebounds when heavily one-sided positions have already been unwound. The total is an estimate from the reporting window; different tracking services may report different amounts and cutoffs.

The Economic Times also reported roughly $261 million in outflows from US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds during the period it examined. ETF flows matter because they reflect one channel for regulated investment demand, but a single day's withdrawals cannot establish a long-term trend.

Did Ethereum and altcoins recover too?

In the same source snapshot, Bitcoin was up roughly 1.05% across 24 hours while Ethereum gained about 3.37%. Several large altcoins also rebounded. This suggests that the bounce was broader than a Bitcoin-only event, but the movements do not guarantee a durable shift toward risk-taking.

RecoupRev's separate Dogecoin report explains why DOGE can lag even when BTC rises. Crypto market breadth, spot volumes, stablecoin liquidity and derivatives funding should be reviewed together rather than using one high-profile coin as a proxy for the entire sector.

What investors should watch next

The major variables are new inflation releases, the Federal Reserve's rate outlook, daily ETF flows and the behaviour of leverage near heavily watched price levels. The $80,000 and $82,000 figures are widely observed round numbers, not guaranteed support or resistance lines.

Traders should not interpret a sharp bounce after liquidations as proof that further losses are impossible. Equally, the forced-selling total does not establish that the market must continue falling.

All figures in this story are from the cited October 16 report and may have changed since publication. This is market reporting, not a trade recommendation.
