Hardware Wallet Safety: What the Ledger Reseller Investigation Teaches
A reported Southeast Asian wallet incident highlights the importance of device supply chains, seed phrases and official alerts.
The Block reported October 9 that Ledger was investigating suspected losses linked to hardware wallets bought via reseller CryptoBilis. The size of the incident was uncertain, and independent on-chain estimates should not be mistaken for a confirmed forensic conclusion.
A hardware wallet is intended to isolate signing keys, but phishing, counterfeit or compromised devices and unsafe seed-phrase handling can still expose holdings. No legitimate wallet provider should need a recovery phrase to provide customer support.
Buyers can reduce risk by consulting the manufacturer's authorized channels, running verification tools and checking the authenticity of support notices. An emergency request to move funds should be verified independently before any transaction is signed.
