What Happens When a Cryptocurrency ETF Closes? The BWOW Example
Bitwise's Dogecoin fund wind-down offers a practical example of how trading, net asset value and investor cash distributions work.
Bitwise's SEC filing says its Dogecoin ETF will stop trading after October 14 and distribute remaining proceeds around October 22 using the October 21 fund net asset value. This illustrates the gap between an exchange's final tradable price and the sponsor's liquidation mechanics.
An ETF holder owns shares of the fund, not necessarily a personally controlled wallet containing the underlying coin. The last market quote can differ from the fund's net asset value, while a custodian and other intermediaries administer liquidation.
Before any fund closure, holders should read the sponsor's notices, verify distribution details with their broker and consider tax consequences. A planned closure is not by itself a forecast for the cryptocurrency's broader market.
