The difference between price, market cap and FDV

A token trading at a fraction of a cent can feel cheap even when its overall valuation is enormous. Token price by itself tells almost nothing about whether buyers are paying a reasonable amount for exposure. Market capitalization generally multiplies a chosen definition of circulating supply by the latest price, while fully diluted valuation (FDV) applies the price to a broader total or maximum supply assumption.

Consider a hypothetical token with 100 million circulating units and a price of $0.10. Its circulating market cap is $10 million. If total potential supply is 1 billion units, its simple fully diluted valuation at the same market price is $100 million. That tenfold gap is a warning to examine when the remaining units may enter circulation, not proof the price must immediately fall.

Crypto data providers can define circulating, total and maximum supply differently, especially for treasury holdings, bridged tokens, burned assets and exchange custody. An FDV figure is a useful first screen but not a substitute for reading the actual token contract and allocation documentation.

Why unlocks can create sell pressure

An unlock makes previously restricted tokens transferable under a vesting schedule or contract rule. Recipients may include contributors, investors, foundations, market makers or community programs. The economic effect depends on whether recipients intend to sell, how much of the new supply reaches trading venues and how liquid the market is.

A large unlock relative to daily genuine trading volume deserves attention, but the headline amount is not a deterministic forecast. Recipients may already have hedged exposure, may be subject to additional restrictions or may choose to hold. Markets may have priced in a known future unlock well before the tokens become transferable.

Check whether the schedule is linear, with tokens released gradually, or cliff-based, with a large block released at once. Also verify time zone and whether transfers can occur immediately after an unlock. An attractive vesting graphic can conceal administrator permissions that allow the schedule to be changed.

Concentration can matter more than token count

If 60% of a circulating supply belongs to a small group of related wallets, the effective float accessible to ordinary market participants may be far less than the headline supply. But wallet counts can mislead too: one exchange controls multiple wallets, and one beneficial owner may distribute holdings across many addresses. Address attribution is an investigative problem.

Review named treasury addresses, vesting contracts, liquidity-provider positions and team allocations. If the documentation omits important wallet owners, record that uncertainty rather than invent an identity. A high concentration of holdings can magnify market impact when large holders transfer coins onto trading venues, but an observed transfer is not itself proof that a sale occurred.

Concentration and liquidity interact. A token with a modest market cap but deep reliable two-sided trading may tolerate some sales better than a larger token whose pool is shallow or can be removed abruptly. The amount someone could actually realize from a large sale matters more than the notional last traded price.

What token burns really do

Burning tokens can reduce outstanding or accessible supply if the transfer is verifiable and irrevocable. Projects sometimes promote burns as inherently bullish, but a burn's effect depends on what supply definition changed and whether the tokens were previously expected to reach the market. Burning tokens that were already permanently inaccessible may have little practical impact.

Check the transaction and the destination address, along with whether minting privileges remain active. A burn headline is less reassuring if administrators can create additional tokens later. In some designs, supply reductions interact with transaction taxes or rebasing mechanisms; the headline number may not mean the same thing across projects.

Market demand still matters. Lower nominal supply does not mechanically force a higher price if buyers become less interested or confidence deteriorates. Tokenomics is one input into valuation, not a perpetual-motion machine for investor returns.

Compare unlock size with real exit liquidity

Suppose a scheduled release represents $5 million at the last displayed token price, while the principal exchange pool and order book cannot absorb even a fraction of that amount without major slippage. The notional unlock does not guarantee a $5 million sale, but it identifies an imbalance worth researching. Consider how much of the supply is likely to be offered and how fast genuine buyers can absorb it.

Volume numbers can be noisy. Related-party wash transactions or automated high-frequency activity may exaggerate apparent demand. Examine spread, depth at defined distances from the midprice, the quality of participating exchanges and whether liquidity can be withdrawn by privileged accounts.

An early vesting investor's cost basis may be very different from a retail buyer's. A large reported paper gain can create an incentive to sell, but assigning a precise probability without verified holdings and contractual details would be speculation.

Red flags in memecoin promotional claims

Watch for messages that emphasize only a small unit price, an imminent exchange listing, an unaudited partnership or an artificial countdown to buy. Misleading promotional campaigns can create a surge of demand that insiders exploit. The SEC investor education site describes pump-and-dump warning signs; the details of applicable securities law differ across jurisdictions and token types.

Verify contract addresses from trustworthy primary channels. Check whether the team can change taxes, blacklist sellers, mint units or upgrade contract logic. Beware of social accounts offering guaranteed airdrops or requiring an unrestricted wallet signature. A project can have clean-looking tokenomics and still contain malicious transfer controls.

Do not assume that a token's presence on a popular data site or decentralized exchange constitutes due diligence. Listings can make information easier to find, but they do not ensure the project is legitimate or liquid.

A seven-step tokenomics worksheet

Record token price with a timestamp, circulating supply, total or maximum supply, FDV, next scheduled unlock and its beneficiaries, privileged supply-control functions, and realistic liquidity at several sell sizes. Mark unknown fields prominently. Compare on-chain observations with published team documents and recognize that either can be incomplete.

When evaluating a major unlock, ask whether a price decline is driven by new selling, broad market moves or an unrelated protocol event. An explanation that starts with the timing of an unlock must still produce evidence of actual transfers or sales before claiming direct causality.

Memecoin trading is highly speculative. A sound reader-facing article can explain how an unlock changes potential supply without manufacturing a bullish or bearish prediction. The purpose of this framework is to improve skepticism and risk awareness, not to recommend a particular token.
