PEPE, DOGE and SHIB Diverge as Memecoin Liquidity Stays Uneven Before US CPI
A snapshot of the CoinDesk memecoin index showed different short-term price responses across popular tokens even as macro volatility approached.

The development
Popular memecoins did not move in lockstep in a CoinDesk memecoin-index snapshot checked on October 14, 2026. The listed constituents showed PEPE up around 4% over a 24-hour window while DOGE was up roughly 0.6% and SHIB was slightly negative. These figures change continuously; they identify the index page's observation rather than guaranteed current prices.
Background and figures
Different returns among widely discussed tokens are a useful reminder that 'memecoin market' is not one trade. A token may have more active exchange liquidity, a different distribution of large holders, a distinct futures market or new social-media attention. Even similarly themed coins can have highly different bid-ask spreads and slippage.
Why it matters
Dogecoin remained the largest of these examples by reported market capitalization, but capitalization is not the amount of cash available to buy the token. That distinction matters when a small market order produces an outsized percentage move in a thinner asset.
Where readers can misinterpret it
Macroeconomic conditions also matter. US September CPI was scheduled for October 14, potentially changing the dollar, Treasury yields and appetite for leveraged speculation. If risk assets sell off broadly, a memecoin whose order book is thin may move much faster than the major cryptocurrencies, but there is no fixed multiplier.
Risks and caveats
An investor trying to compare tokens should capture exchange-specific spot price, 24-hour volume, circulating supply, exchange depth and derivative funding at the same timestamp. Avoid basing conclusions on a screenshot in which one figure was updated hours later than another.
